What we do
Projects
Our initiatives combine historical research, education and the art of storytelling. Below is a proposal of the Foundation’s main projects.
Remember Us. Voices from the Past
A digital archive of accounts and testimonies of the battle’s participants — told in the voices of those who were there.
Filmed recordings of the last living veterans of the Italian front — above all Poles, but also soldiers of every nationality who fought at Monte Cassino. Accounts of civilian witnesses and residents of the areas caught up in the fighting. And finally, giving voice to the children and grandchildren of the soldiers, to families returning to the battlefield to find a fragment of their heritage.
The Heroes’ Road. Trail of Freedom
Mapping and describing a trail of remembrance following the 2nd Polish Corps at Monte Cassino.
Building and nurturing young people’s passion for discovering the history of the soldiers who fought on the fronts of the Second World War against two empires of evil — Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Educational and historical programmes combined with trips to the battlefields, above all to the town of Cassino and its surroundings. Walking the trail of the places most essential to a deep intellectual and emotional experience of the battle in which Poles played such a vital role.
National Day of History
An annual educational event bringing the history of the battle and the soldiers’ sacrifice to young Poles.
A description of this project is in preparation — details of the National Day of History initiative will appear here soon.
Red Poppies. Tribute to the Victors
A remembrance campaign around the symbol of the red poppy — concerts, exhibitions and public events.
We celebrate 18 May as a special day of remembrance of the great Polish victory at Monte Cassino. To show our gratitude and respect for the heroism of the soldiers of the 2nd Polish Corps, on this day we can pin on a red poppy — the symbol of their struggle and sacrifice. We encourage volunteers in every Polish city, town and village to make red poppies out of paper and hand them out to residents. It is also an occasion for many generations to act together in honour of those who fought in the battle.
